John S. Lowe

John S. Lowe retired from SMU Dedman School of Law after 36 years at the University, where he has taught in the areas of oil and gas and energy law and served as senior associate dean for Academic Affairs from 2009-2014. He earned his B.A. from Denison University and LL.B. from Harvard. Before coming to SMU, he was a Maxwell Fellow in Malawi; worked in private practice in Columbus, Ohio; and served as a faculty member at the University of Toledo and later the University of Tulsa, where he was director of the National Energy Law and Policy Institute. He has held long-term appointments as an honorary lecturer and principal researcher of the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and senior fellow of the faculty of law at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has served as an international legal advisor for petroleum issues in the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce, lecturing at universities and advising governments around the world. Lowe has authored or co-authored nine books and many articles. He retires as the George W. Hutchison Professor of Energy Law emeritus.
